Section 2 - A Summary on the Income for CT

A steady and reliable source of income is vital for Community Transport operators, allowing for long term planning, investment in vehicles and retention of staff.

Concerns over income and funding were cited as one of three main priorities for 2024 by 3 out of 5 of respondents.

CTOs do not rely solely on one source of income.

On average, CTOs had four different sources, rising to 5 different income sources for primary purpose organisations and falling to 3 sources for secondary purpose organisations.

However, grant funding is vital to CTOs. Almost 4 out of 5 CTOs receive this type of income.

Whilst CTOs are likely to receive several different sources of income, some of these are larger than others.

Grant income is particularly important.

For 39% of CTOs receiving grants, this is their largest source of income and for 81% of grant recipients it is in the three largest sources of income

Likewise, contract funding is extremely important for those that receive it.

62% of CTOs receive income from Local Authorities, which places organisations in a vulnerable position, given the high reliance shown to grant and contract funding, and the current pressures on Local Authority budgets.

Journeys for health purpose are made by two-thirds of CTOs, but only a tenth of CTO’s receive funding from health authorities.

Grant income and savings are also central to financing the purchase of new vehicles, with most organisations relying on more than one source of finance, due to the large investment required.
