Operators in Wales get income from a variety of sources, and the Bus Service Support Grant (BSSG) has been a key source of funding for many CTA Cymru members for years. The problem is that the overall amount has remained static for a decade, different areas administer the grant in different ways, and the annual funding cycle creates a perpetual funding treadmill.

CTA Cymru has secured support from Ken Skates, MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, to work up a proposal for Government on the mechanism for funding the Wales CT sector. PLEASE NOTE: this does not include the amount of funding made available to the sector every year, although rest assured, we will continue to apply pressure on that front as well.

This is an incredible opportunity to influence the potential future funding mechanism for CT so we’re inviting you to two online operator-only discussion sessions, to make sure we get it right. As we need to get a proposal to the cabinet Secretary before parliamentary purdah starts, we’ve arranged the sessions to take place as quickly as possible.

Session 1  Tuesday 3^rd February 10.00 – 11.30 am

Scoping: initial discussion, identifying the key funding issues, challenges and opportunities, and the critical feature of any new funding mechanism.

Session 2  Monday 23^rd February 1.30 – 3.00 pm

Refining: we’ll come back to you with our summary based on the first session and to dig a bit deeper into what a realistic roadmap for funding the sector in Wales might look like.

We’d love you to join us for both sessions if possible but appreciate this may not be feasible so will also provide opportunities to feedback to us in writing, and each session will be recorded for you to watch later if that helps you give us your feedback.

Alongside these sessions we will be meeting with colleagues from the Welsh Government, Transport for Wales, and ATCO in a task and finish group looking at the same challenge from their perspective. Our meetings will be taking place one week before the T&F group’s meeting, so we can keep the flow of information direct and clear and your feedback and proposals at the top of the agenda. Your views are essential in shaping the future of funding the Welsh CT movement, and we’re grateful for your input and support.
