Community transport works across the Christmas period, even on Christmas day, to provide those who would otherwise be alone with access to family, friendship, company and independence over the holidays and we’re collecting stories of the incredible work that our members do.

Gairloch Community Car Scheme, Gairloch, Highland

GCCS don’t operate on Christmas Day as the majority of their passengers have family and tend to use the scheme for appointments etc so there isn’t any call for drivers on Christmas Day. However GCCS do have one passenger who has no family locally. This gentleman is in his 70’s and not so mobile.

He attends Day Care twice a week on a Monday and Friday. Christmas Day 2015 fell on a Friday and after affirming with the Care Home Manager that a Christmas Dinner would be available for him the Project Coordinator came over (13 Miles) and took him to the Care Home on Christmas Morning, left him there for the day and another volunteer driver came in the late afternoon en route to her own Christmas Dinner and took him home.

This gentleman was able to spend his Christmas Day in the warmth with company and enjoyed a lovely dinner. Hopefully this will be repeated this year too.
