New Insurance Cover Removes Barrier for Community Car Clubs
The Community Transport Association (CTA), working closely with our Insurance Partners Business Choice Direct (BCD), is delighted to announce the launch of a new insurance offer designed specifically for Community Car Clubs.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the support and collaboration of our partners and sector colleagues: Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK), The Scottish Rural & Islands Transport Community (SRITC) CIC, Edge Innovation Ltd, Derwent Valley Car Club and the Blackhall Mill Community Association.
For years, members have told us that insurance has been one of the biggest barriers to setting up or sustaining a Car Club. Rising costs and a lack of suitable cover have even forced some clubs to close. This new scheme provides a dedicated solution, tailored for Community Car Clubs with two or more vehicles.
Victoria Armstrong, Chief Executive of the Community Transport Association (CTA), said:
“Our members have told us time and again how difficult it has been to secure insurance for Community Car Clubs. That’s why this announcement is so important: it removes a real barrier and opens the door for more communities to run successful Car Clubs. It’s been great to work alongside our partners to make this happen, and to see insurers recognising the vital role Car Clubs play.”
Tristan Scaife, Director of Commercial at BCD, said:
“We are delighted to finally be able to offer this solution to new, existing, and re-forming car clubs. We know how frustrating this issue has been, preventing so many clubs from supporting their local communities. But thanks to your feedback, insights, and the ongoing support of CTA and CoMoUK, we can now look forward to seeing many more clubs on the road, benefiting people across the country.”
Richard Dilks, Chief Executive of Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK), added:
“For more than half a decade, we have been trying to improve the dire insurance situation facing smaller car clubs, so this is a very welcome development. The lack of available cover, as well as the expense of getting renewals, has caused collateral damage on a large scale and has sadly resulted in some community-scale car clubs in the UK closing altogether. Furthermore, difficulties in obtaining insurance have also stopped potential new car clubs from getting off the ground, denying people a low-cost, environmentally friendly transport option. We were therefore happy to be able to support the excellent work of BCD and the CTA in this area, co-ordinating outreach to smaller-scale car clubs. However, there is a lot still to do, which is why we are calling on the UK Government to use its influence to help the situation, before any more car club closures occur.”
This new insurance offer is an important step forward for the sector and will make it easier for communities to establish and sustain their own Car Clubs, providing affordable, flexible and sustainable transport.
