Alan Jones reflects on the past six years as he steps down as Chair of CTA

As Community Transport Week 2026 begins, Alan Jones is preparing to step down as Chair of the Community Transport Association after nearly six years in the role. Looking back on a period of growth and development, Alan reflects on the people, progress and shared commitment that have helped shape CTA and the wider Community Transport sector.

During his time as Chair, Alan led the Board through an important period of growth and development for CTA, helping to shape a stronger and more representative organisation. Under his leadership, the Trustee Board evolved to give members a stronger voice through member trustees, while co-opted trustees brought additional skills, experience and fresh perspectives.

Alan’s thoughtful leadership and commitment to CTA have made a lasting contribution to the organisation.

“Looking back, I am most proud of the team we have built and the progress we have achieved together,”

He also highlights the transformation of MiDAS, the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme, into a modern, high-quality training programme that has strengthened its place within the sector and is increasingly recognised as an industry standard.

Acknowledging the contribution of CTA’s management teams across the UK, Alan said:

“Their hard work and determination have helped strengthen the organisation and improve the support we provide to members.”

Why Community Transport matters

Reflecting on the importance of the sector, Alan highlighted the difference Community Transport makes to people’s everyday lives.

“For many individuals, Community Transport is much more than a service; it is a lifeline that enables them to remain independent, connected, and active within their communities.”

A driver or transport coordinator may be the only person a passenger sees or speaks to that day. As Alan puts it:

“The social connection they provide can be just as important as the journey itself.”

Looking ahead

As CTA celebrates its 40th anniversary, Alan believes members should remain at the heart of the organisation’s work, alongside a commitment to collaboration, innovation and high standards.

For Alan, that also means staying focused on CTA’s core mission: improving people’s lives by supporting accessible and inclusive transport services.

His advice to the incoming Chair is to keep members at the centre of decisions and work closely with staff and trustees.

“CTA is in a strong position, but continued success will require listening, collaboration, and a willingness to embrace change,”

“Most importantly, enjoy the role. It is both a privilege and a responsibility, and the opportunity to contribute to such an important sector is immensely rewarding.”

A thank you

Alan offered his thanks to CTA’s members for their work in communities across the UK, to the staff team for their professionalism and commitment, and to fellow trustees for their support, insight and friendship. He also recognised and praised the contribution of volunteers across the sector, who are the lifeblood of their organisations.

“Serving as Chair of CTA has been a tremendous honour, and I leave the organisation confident that it has a strong future ahead.”

Everyone at CTA would like to thank Alan for his time, expertise and commitment as Chair, and wish him all the best for the future.
