Modernising for Growth: Welcome to Community Transport Week 2024!

Since stepping into the role of CEO at the Community Transport Association (CTA) two years ago, I’ve learned the importance of modernising our approach to better support our members and the wider community transport sector. As we celebrate the second-ever Community Transport Week, this is the perfect opportunity to share and reflect on how the Community Transport sector and the CTA have evolved and grown, and to look ahead to the future.

Our theme for Community Transport Week this year is ‘Celebrating Community Solutions’. It is inspired by our CTA Manifesto: A Better Future for Transport - National Challenges, Community Solutions. Our Manifesto has five key themes, which we’ll be spotlighting here on our website and social media over the next five days.

Today’s theme is ‘Modernising for Growth’, and I can’t think of a better introduction to Community Transport Week.

A New Mission and Vision for CTA

Community transport is about much more than just getting people from A to B. It’s about building social value, creating connections, and supporting communities in ways that go beyond traditional transport services. That’s why we’ve refreshed our mission to focus on leading a thriving community transport movement—one that recognises the importance of the social and community impact our members provide.

Our renewed mission isn’t just about transportation; it’s about fostering connections, creating social value, and ensuring positive community impact. We support our members so that they can break down transport barriers and pass on a sense of belonging, support, empowerment and connection to communities across the UK.

At CTA, we believe that community transport plays a special and vital role in the UK’s transport sector. We will continue to lead the sector with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and growth. By modernising our approach and investing in our members, we are building a movement that is resilient, dynamic, and recognised as a vital part of the UK’s transport infrastructure.

The Four Pillars of Our Work

To fulfil our mission, we’ve structured our work around four key pillars that shape how we support our members and promote the sector:

  1. Membership: Our members are the heart of everything we do. We provide exclusive resources, benefits, and opportunities to strengthen their capabilities and impact.
  2. Research & Policy: We advocate for community transport at all levels, ensuring our members’ voices influence policies and decisions that affect the sector.
  3. Advice & Support: We offer tailored guidance and expertise to help our members navigate challenges, innovate, and grow.
  4. Training: Our training delivery provides essential skills and knowledge, empowering organisations to deliver high-quality and safe services.

Each of these pillars is a critical aspect of how we achieve our mission. By enhancing membership benefits, driving impactful research and policy, offering expert advice, and delivering top-notch training, we are not only supporting our members but also ensuring the communities they serve feel the positive impact of our work.
