Community transport works across the Christmas period, even on Christmas day, to provide those who would otherwise be alone with access to family, friendship, company and independence over the holidays. We’re collecting stories of the incredible work that our members do: take a look at our main Community Transport Christmas page for all our stories so far.

    South West Community Transport, Glasgow

Our story starts with an elderly couple who joined our ‘Hoppa Shoppa’ service way back in 2005. The Hoppa Shoppa is one of the services that we provide for our older members and runs two days a week for shopping, with an away day on Saturday. Other services we run are affordable minibus transport, a volunteer car scheme and an afternoon tea project with our community in Glasgow. Over the years at Christmas we have organised getting our members to a community panto or to see the Christmas lights.

But getting back to my wee couple: the husband unfortunately passed away over a year and a half ago and his wife passed away this year leaving a generous donation towards our Hoppa Service. This kindness from the couple has allowed us to by a second hand accessible car for our members who have a disability and can’t access public transport.

Thanks to our wee couple who loved using our service, this year we’ve booked a trip to a Christmas panto in one of our theatres in Glasgow along with a Christmas dinner for the Hoppa Shoppa members, helping them get out and about at Christmas and make new friends.
